Institute for Specialized Medicine and Intervention: A Healing Space for Vulnerable Groups

The Institute for Specialized Medicine and Intervention (ISMI), located in Kirkland, Quebec, Canada, spans 380 square meters. It provides compassionate, state-of-the-art treatment for vulnerable groups, including women, transgender individuals, and child patients. HOK designed the interiors and user experience for its new radiology clinic, with a focus on women’s health.

ISMI’s vision of delivering care, respect, and hope inspired the design. Given the invasive and emotionally charged nature of treatments offered, HOK created a serene environment. Soft, neutral colors and minimalist aesthetics evoke a spa-like atmosphere, helping patients relax. Biophilic elements, such as living plant walls, further enhance the healing ambiance.

Beyond comfort, the clinic integrates advanced technology to enable earlier and more accurate diagnoses. This blend of empathetic design and cutting-edge medical tools ensures that even the most vulnerable patients receive both physical care and emotional support—making ISMI a model for patient-centered specialized healthcare.
